The American Academy of Physician Education (AA-PE) was established following a discussion at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in Miami, April 2005 between 10 of North America's leading neurologists and the current AA-PE executives Dr. Jeffrey Hillier (President) and Bretten Gordeau (Senior VP, Chief Compliance Officer) out of the concern over the influence of marketing messages within physician CME. The discussion concluded that a nonprofit academy should be established to meet the needs of physicians and other healthcare professionals for unbiased CME and that the academy should attract membership of like-minded medical professionals with an interest in CME. AA-PE was incorporated as a nonprofit in late April 2005. AA-PE is not owned by, nor part of a commercial entity producing, marketing, re-selling, distributing or otherwise participating in or profiting from the distribution or promotion of health care goods or services used or consumed by patients. AA-PE does not provide promotional activities for any pharmaceutical, medical device or any other manufacturing company. AA-PE is accredited by the Institute for Medical Quality / California Medical Association (IMQ/CMA). AA-PE's accreditation status may be viewed on the ACCME website - list of State Accredited Providers - at http://www.accme.org/index.cfm/fa/home.popular_id/66be063a-8081-40f2-9615-042a733485d8.cfm In May 2009, AA-PE became one of the few organizations to be awarded re-accreditation with 100% compliance under the new ACCME criteria and is accredited until April 2013. AA-PE offers activities within the states of California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Hawaii and Alaska. AA-PE provides activities regional and national under the 70/30 rule with the permission of IMQ and ACCME. CME activities are designed to improve the effectiveness of practice through knowledge reinforcement and skill improvement leading to improved patient outcomes. While AA-PE conducts live and enduring activities in major areas of health care, it also emphasizes underserved specialty areas that are not traditionally represented in CME activities, such as activities focused on minority communities. In May of 2009 AA-PE was recognized for its efforts with the 2009 "Cultural and Linguistic Competency Award" from IMQ/CMA. AA-PE collaborates under the updated criteria on the national, regional and state level with organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association, University of Oklahoma Office of CME and Axdev Group to support office-based physicians through CME in their efforts to improve patient outcomes. Types of Activities Offered Live workshop driven half/full day activities Online Learning through webinars and multimedia enduring materials. Membership As AA-PE has evolved, it has attracted membership from a diverse population of physicians from the United States and other countries. Moving forward in 2009/10 AA-PE will increase its focus on providing additional services to members and develop a digitally based medical learning society offering non-exclusive, fee-based membership to health practitioners.
