Sandra Liliana Oakes, MD is Associate Professor, Geriatric Division in the Department of Family and
Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she is
also Co-fellowship Director of the Geriatric Fellowship Program. Dr Oakes earned her medical
degree from the National University of Colombia in Bogota. She completed her residency and
geriatric residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center.  Dr Oakes has been the recipient
of numerous honors and awards including the MACY Harvard Institute Scholar Award and was
named one of the Top Physicians in San Antonio by the Scene San Antonio Monthly Magazine. She is
also a member of several professional societies and is a fellow of the American Academy of Family
Physicians and fellow of the American Geriatric Society. In addition, she is Chair of the International
Activities Interest group of the American Geriatric Society. Dr Oakes is the author or co-author of
numerous peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on the subject of dementia. Her areas of interest
include ethics and cultural competence in the care of older adults in acute settings and geriatric
teaching tools and strategies in the primary care and interdisciplinary settings.
Dr. Menchola obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (Clinical Neuropsychology track) at the
University of Arizona, under the mentorship of Dr. Alfred Kaszniak. Her clinical training focused on the
neuropsychological assessment of English- and Spanish-speaking older adults, with an emphasis
on Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Her graduate research focused on the
psychophysiology of emotion in healthy aging and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, as a member of
the Arizona Alzheimer's Disease Center Education and Information Transfer Core, Dr. Menchola has
been involved in the development and evaluation of educational material on aging and Alzheimer's,
as well as other outreach efforts with the Hispanic community in Southern Arizona. Dr. Menchola is
currently a post-doctoral research fellow with the Arizona Alzheimer's Consortium, at the University of
Arizona site. She is currently a research associate in Dr. Gene Alexander's Brain Imaging, Behavior
and Aging lab, and she continues to conduct neuropsychological evaluations at the University of
Arizona Memory Disorders Clinic. Dr. Menchola is a member of the Board of Directors of the
Alzheimer's Association Desert Southwest Chapter.
