Statement of Need:
Primary care physicians are challenged daily with complex diagnostic and patient management issues. This activity is designed to bridge
knowledge gaps and update physicians on clinical practice and relevant research through interactive case based presentations to improve practice
and promote better patient outcomes.
Chronic Pain
  • Identify influential elements in the etiology of FMS and osteoarthritis
  • Diagnose FMS according to the ACR criteria for the classification of fibromyalgia
  • Describe the accuracy of the pain numeric rating scale vs. 2 other measures of pain in a primary care setting
  • Balance clinical and risk management considerations for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain on opioid
    therapy
  • Show knowledge of emerging therapies for chronic pain disorders
  • Recognize that special patient populations may require special considerations in the management of their
    chronic pain syndrome
Bipolar Disorder
  • Recognize symptoms and diagnose disorders in the bipolar spectrum
  • Differentiate bipolar disorder from other psychiatric disorders and comorbid conditions to determine appropriate
    management
  • Outline effective therapies for bipolar disorder (BD) based on best practice treatment algorithms and individual
    patient profiles
  • Manage side effects of antipsychotic medications to optimize patient outcomes
Major Depressive Disorder
  • Recognize the importance of remission and recovery as treatment goals for MDD
  • Identify factors in a patient’s presentation that may predict treatment response
  • Construct treatment plans involving pharmacotherapy for patients suffering from MDD and TRD
Pain & Depression
  • State the prevalence, symptoms and Treatment options of depression and pain in the comorbid patient
    population
  • Identify barriers to treating illness
  • Formulate an appropriate initial treatment and follow-up plan
  • Evaluate safety and efficacy of pharmacologic agents
  • Identify the neurochemical links between depression and pain
